Dunkerque LNG and its territory

Dunkerque LNG is promoting jobs in the industry to students

23/04/18

Dunkerque LNG is aware that a visit on their site could inspire an interest in careers in the industry, but the sector is lacking in visibility. That’s why the company regularly organises tours of the LNG terminal and workshops in schools. Too often, students dismiss the industrial sector because they don’t know enough about it.

"Too many girls in the sciences don’t feel that a career in the industry is for them. It’s a real shame. That’s why Dunkerque LNG is trying to break down these psychological barriers by organising tours of the site aimed at girls," adds Anne Dufour, an Engineering Liaison Officer for Schools. She is on secondment from EDF to the National Department of Education to help promote the industry in schools. As part of the Industry Week , 22 female high-school and pre-university science students met young female students doing their theses on the topic of refrigeration at Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale. They also met Béatrice Prud’homme, President of Dunkerque LNG, on the terminal site. She has spent her entire career working in the industry in various positions. "The idea was to show them what the average working day is like for women in the industry, to show them that they could have good careers and to encourage them to pursue careers in the industry," adds Anne Dufour.

Dunkerque LNG also invites schools to visit. Most recently, 30 students from Collège Levis-Strauss in Lille and vocational students from Lycée Normandie Niemen in Calais made the trip. "Students work on a Lego© model of the LNG terminal before visiting the site," explains Anne Dufour. "The sheer scale of the facilities in real life often leaves a lasting impression." The tours are followed by an introduction to the roles required to keep the LNG terminal running and a visit to the control room where operators talk to them about their jobs and the qualifications required to do them. Nothing compares to seeing things in the flesh to encourage students to pursue a career in the area.
