There is no doubt that 2019 was a remarkable year. Business was brisk but controlled. In 2019, 72 vessels docked at the Dunkirk LNG terminal, compared to 17 in 2018 - a record increase attributable to the work and unwavering commitment of all employees. The rise in the volume of business occurred during an organisational transition process connected to a change in share ownership at the end of 2018. This first joint and complete fiscal year proved to be very positive. Dunkerque LNG and Gaz-Opale have demonstrated that they share the same professionalism and the same values. It is thanks to their commitment that 2019 was such a success and I thank them for it.
The volume of business increased without adversely affecting safety standards, one of the keys to operating the terminal. In a list of all of our concerns, safety is at the top. We are very pleased to announce that there was no lost-time accident in 2019. Our great results prove that the new employees who joined our teams have acquired the expertise required and share our safety culture.
Encouraged by our performance in 2019, the time has come to turn our attention to 2020. With regard to major projects, we are in the process of finalising the commissioning of the tank-truck filling station. In the next few weeks, we are going to approach the market in order to sell the terminal’s available capacity, namely, up to 3.5 billion cubic metres (3.5 BCM). The arrival of new clients within the terminal could result in new vessel rotations as from 2021. We are preparing the future accordingly.
With regard to studies, we are finalising those on the wharf of the new off-shore LNG supply vessels. We are also beginning technical studies on a new large vessel wharf and on a second high-pressure compressor.
Within the Dunkirk LNG terminal, we are analysing the changes to the LNG market and we are very optimistic about its development. Every effort is being made to ensure that our teams capitalise on, as well as possible, the great opportunities that await. May 2020 be an exhilarating year!
Juan Vazquez, CEO of Dunkerque LNG and of Gaz-Opale
